AI Literacy Is No Longer Optional

Over the past little while, I have had the chance to volunteer in Edmonton high schools and speak with students and educators about AI.

The most obvious thing I have learned is this:

Students are already using it.

Some use it well.

Some use it badly.

Some use it to understand a concept they were struggling with.

Some use it to avoid doing the thinking altogether.

And a lot of teachers are still trying to figure out where the line is.

That is why I think AI literacy is no longer optional.

The debate cannot stay at “allow AI” versus “ban AI.”

The technology is already in students’ hands. The useful question now is whether we are going to teach them how to use it with judgment.

The plagiarism problem is partly a guidance problem

I have seen students who understand AI better than the adults evaluating their work.

I have also seen the other side: students handing in work they clearly did not understand because a model produced something that looked finished.

Both are real problems.

But if the only rule students hear is “using AI equals cheating,” we create another problem.

They stop talking about how they use it.

Teachers lose visibility.

Students do not learn where responsible use ends and academic dishonesty begins.

And when guidance is inconsistent, a student can use AI as a study tool in one class and be treated as if they plagiarized in another.

We need a better shared language.

Using AI to learn is different from using AI to avoid learning

That distinction matters more than the tool itself.

There is a big difference between asking AI:

“Explain this algebra problem another way because I do not understand my teacher’s example.”

and asking:

“Do my assignment for me.”

There is a difference between using AI to challenge your draft and using it to produce a paper you cannot defend.

There is a difference between asking for examples and copying an answer you have never verified.

AI literacy should help students recognize those differences.

The goal should not be to make students afraid of the tool.

The goal should be to make them accountable for the thinking they submit as their own.

Teachers need practical rules too

We put a lot of responsibility on educators without always giving them useful operating guidance.

A teacher does not need another presentation telling them that AI is “transforming education.”

They need practical answers.

What kinds of use are acceptable in this assignment?

What should students disclose?

How do I check whether a student understands the work?

How should I design an assignment when a model can produce a passable first draft in seconds?

What information should never be pasted into a public AI tool?

When is AI assistance useful, and when is it undermining the skill I am actually trying to teach?

Those are AI-literacy questions.

We have taught technology literacy before

This is not the first time schools have had to adapt to a new information tool.

Students had to learn that finding something on Google did not make it true.

They had to learn source literacy.

They had to learn that Wikipedia could be useful without being the final authority.

They had to learn how to cite information from the internet rather than pretend it appeared from nowhere.

AI creates a new version of the same responsibility.

A fluent answer is not automatically a correct answer.

A confident model is not a source.

And a generated paragraph is not evidence that the student understands the subject.

What I would teach as basic AI literacy

If I were designing a simple baseline for students, I would start here.

1. Be transparent about when you used AI

If AI materially helped produce the work, say how.

Transparency removes a lot of ambiguity.

2. Verify what the model tells you

AI can be useful and wrong at the same time.

Students should learn to check important claims against real sources.

3. Be able to explain your own answer

If you submit it, you should be able to defend it.

A simple oral follow-up can reveal very quickly whether a student used AI to support their thinking or replace it.

4. Do not put sensitive information into tools casually

Student data, health information, private conversations, identifying information, or confidential school material should not be pasted into public systems simply because the interface feels like a chat box.

5. Know when not to use AI

This may be the most important one.

Sometimes the struggle is the learning.

If you are learning to write, reason, calculate, research, or form an argument, automating the difficult part too early can remove the exact skill you are supposed to develop.

Assignment design has to evolve too

If educators know students have access to AI, the answer cannot only be better detection.

Some assignments can be designed around process rather than just the final output.

Ask students to show their sources.

Ask them to compare an AI answer with primary material and identify what it missed.

Ask them to explain which parts of a response they accepted or rejected.

Ask for a reflection on how the work changed.

Use oral defence where appropriate.

Ask students to show the reasoning path, not only the polished paragraph at the end.

None of this eliminates plagiarism.

It simply gives teachers more evidence of learning than a detector score ever could.

This problem is bigger than schools

We see the same pattern inside organizations.

A company buys AI tools and then assumes staff will somehow discover the rules on their own.

One team uploads sensitive material. Another refuses to use AI at all. A third quietly automates part of a workflow without telling anyone. Leadership has a policy, but nobody knows how to apply it to Tuesday afternoon.

Responsible AI adoption requires shared operating judgment, not just access to a tool.

The goal is judgment

I do not think students need to become prompt engineers.

I do not think every teacher needs to become an AI expert.

But both need enough literacy to ask better questions:

What is this tool doing for me?

What thinking am I still responsible for?

What information am I giving it?

Can I verify the answer?

Can I explain the work without the model beside me?

That is the skill I want students to leave with.

Not fear of AI.

Not blind trust in AI.

Judgment.

AI literacy is no longer optional because AI use is no longer hypothetical.

The earlier we teach people to use these systems critically, responsibly, and transparently, the better chance we have of making the technology useful without letting it quietly replace the learning.
